How to Sew a Cape: Fabric, Finishing, and What to Know Before You Cut
May 22, 2026
Which fabrics work best for a cape
If there's one garment where you can forget the rules and experiment freely, it's this one. Quilted jacket fabric? You've got a chic rain cape. Tweed or bouclé? Suddenly it's the most sophisticated thing in your wardrobe.
Our recommendation: loosely woven, textural fabrics. They fall beautifully over the shoulders and create those full, flowing folds that give a cape its character.
We've sewn pattern #0101 in cashmere, bouclé, cupro, fleece, and heavy jersey — and every fabric brought something different out of the design. Same pattern, completely different result each time. That's what makes this project so good to come back to.
One thing to check before you buy your fabric: look at the cut edge. Because this cape has no lining, both sides of the fabric are visible. The edge shouldn't fray too much — or if it does, factor your finish method into the choice from the start.
Grain line: the small decision that holds everything together
It might seem like grain line doesn't matter much on something as relaxed as a cape. But aligning the pattern so the grain line runs parallel to one of the front edges helps the cape hold its shape over time — whatever fabric you choose. A small decision, worth making deliberately.
Interfacing: only where it actually helps
The pattern works without any interfacing or fusible materials. But if you want the collar edge sharper and more structured, try interfacing the facing or running a strip of fusible tape along the neckline. It's not required. Sometimes it's exactly what the piece needs — try it and see.
Finishing the edges — no overlocker needed
The right edge finish depends on your fabric:
- Fringe. Tweed and bouclé often have a natural fringe along the selvage — trim it off and topstitch it along the hem. It looks like it was always meant to be there.
- Bias tape in a matching or contrasting colour — clean, classic, works on almost anything.
- A turned hem with hand stitching — a cross stitch or any decorative stitch you like. There is something about a hand-finished hem that makes a handmade piece feel genuinely special.
The zipper: the detail that defines the silhouette
In pattern #0101, pay close attention to the topstitched zipper placement. It is not just a closure — it is what gives this cape its structure, its edge, and its modern character.
That said: what if you used buttons instead? We would not stop you.
Caring for your cape
Whatever fabric you choose, wash at no more than 30°C with a gentle liquid detergent. Better for the fabric, better for the planet.
